Police Arrest Man in Springfield-area Carjacking
Police charged a 27-year-old man with carjacking after they were able to track him down following an extensive neighborhood search in the Manchester Lakes area of Fairfax County early Saturday morning.
Cornelius Henderson, 6118 Bristol Way, Alexandria was arrested at his home around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6. He is accused of commandeering and stealing a taxi around 1:30 a.m. while on his way home from a Centreville area bar.
The suspect reportedly hailed a cab and asked the driver to take him to Springfield. While en route, Henderson allegedly began to assault the cab driver as he drove along Fairfax County Parkway near Rolling Road. Several witnesses contacted police and reported seeing a taxi driving in a reckless manner in the area. The 44-year-old taxi driver was forced to drive off the road and ended up in the grassy median. The suspect then pushed the victim out of the cab, jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away. There were no serious injuries reported.
Through a variety of investigative techniques, including use of a tracking K-9, police located the suspect, and the taxi, in the Bristol Way and Old Brentford Road area several hours later, around three miles from where the taxi was stolen.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
