Fairfax Students Win National Scholastic Art Awards
Eight Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students have been named Gold Award winners at the national level, and one student received an American Visions Medal in the Scholastic Art Awards competition sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Twenty-one FCPS students won awards in the 2010 competition.
Gold Awards were presented to:
- Eleanor Barto of Robinson Secondary School in the sculpture category for “Set Them Free.”
- Christine Choi of Lanier Middle School in the sculpture category for “The Dragon.”
- Amy Donovan of Lake Braddock Secondary School in the digital art category for “Puppet Show.”
- Hyewon Lee of Centreville High School in the drawing category for “Baby and the Elephant.”
- Michelle Lee of West Springfield High School in the printmaking category for “Whoosh.”
- Greg Mills of Poe Middle School in the digital art category for “Lizard Bar Funsized.”
- Jordan Rothwell of Lake Braddock Secondary School in the design category for “French Toast.”
- Jennifer Wilder of West Potomac High School in the painting category for “Gangsta’ Vulture.”
Silver Awards were presented to:
- Kenna Benesh of West Potomac High School in the design category for “Octopus.”
- Michael Crumplar of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the photography category for “Mexican Standoff.”
- Casey Everett of South Lakes High School in the photography category for “Underneath.”
- Natalie Hopkins of Liberty Middle School in the drawing category for “The Sisters Dinner.”
- Christine Lee of Robinson Secondary School in the design category for “Brule Doll.”
- Dan Nguyen of Oakton High School in the drawing category for “The Poetry of Sticks.”
- Jennifer Phan of Falls Church High School in the drawing category for “Without Animals…” and for her art portfolio.
- Mimi Shang of Thoreau Middle School in the drawing category for “Silent Night.”
- Aline Beaumont of South Lakes High School for her art portfolio.
- Nathaniel Dickinson of South County Secondary School for his photography portfolio.
- Abdullah Pathan of Chantilly High School for his art portfolio.
Hyewon Lee of Centreville High School also won an American Visions Medal in the drawing category for “Baby and the Elephant.”
National awards were given to 1,300 artists and writers in 2010. More than 165,000 entries were submitted for this year’s competition. National award winners and their teachers will be honored at an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 9.
